Queen's House March 2d. 1780. Dear William, It is with infinite Satisfaction I have received Your letters the first through the hands of Capt. Thompson of the America, the Second through those of Capt. Thompson of the Hyena and the third Yesterday was brought by Capt. Mc.Bride. You may easily guess the joy I felt at the Bravery, Skill, and Humanity shown on this glorious occasion, and that from the Admiral down to the lowest Man in the Fleet that conduct has appeared which makes them an honour to their Country and Profession. I am sincerely happy that Your conduct has been such as to deserve the Approbation of Your Admiral; Dear William You cannot doubt that if on Your returning to Spithead I hear Admiral Digby thinks it proper You may come to Us, that the Queen and I shall feel great joy at Seeing You again. Be steadfast in a due Subordination to Your Superiors and when the Service of Your Country makes You meet its Enemies, remember that though an affectionate Father my sole wish is that You should then do your Duty; Let Your conduct in the first Action You have seen, encourage You ever to behave as properly. This letter probably will not find You at Gibraltar, but at all hazard I did not think it right that Capt. Thompson should return without a line from Dear William Your most Affectionate Father George R. To My Dearly Beloved Son Prince William March 2d - 1780
