He was accused of high treason, in endeavouring to subvert the fundamental laws, & likewise the groundless charge of popery which his life, & afterwards his death belied, was urged against him--The Lords appeared willing to acquit him but the Commons, his accusers passed an ordinance for his axecution & terrified the Lords to give their consent--He was brought to the Scaffold in the year 1644 & the death of Laud was followed by a total alteration of the ceremonies of the Church
