Princes Voluntarily swore allegiance to him, so that he became master of that Kingdom without bloodshed. The King had for some years before met with internal disturbance from the arrogance of Thomas Becket whom he had raised from a mean station to the See of Canterbury; at last four Knights thinking to pleasure the King went to Canterbury entered the Cathedral where Becket was officiating, and beat out his brains with Clubs at the foot of the Alter--His resolution during life, and his resignation when dying gained him the hearts of the people, and the King was prevailed on by the Pope's Legate to do penance
