& take a little fresh air in the Morning -- Sir Lucas not being at this time in favor with H.My. did not receive that gracious Answer, which might have been Expected from an Offer so indulgent -- He answer'd, that He did not wish to walk -- the proposition however was not forgot -- [[underline]] Wednesday Decr. 3d. [[/underline]] Recollecting Sir Lucas Pepys's proposal of Yesterday this Morning H.My. Expected a Walk & called for his Boots -- & He named Me as the Person He wished should attend Him -- This awkward contre tems threw all in confusion, & a succession of Messages reached Me that the King Expected his Walk-- Sir Lucas Pepys finding that none approved of the dilemma into which He had thus so incautiously involved Us all seem'd to share the unpleasant consequences of it & Sir George Baker was Equally discomposed & puzzled. All thought the Offer proposed had been inconsiderate & rash but thought that faith should be preserved. The Physicians consulted the Queen - The Queen was perplexed & agitated, but declined [[underline]] directing, [[/underline]] as She had throughout this Illness most wisely resolved. The Physicians then applied to Me, as His Majesty had named Me as the Person He inclined should attend Him in his Walk -- I said that if I was called upon by the Physicians I would go, tho' I was by no means inclined to Volunteer on ths Occasion Even tho' H.Ms. preference had been so marked towards Me.
