That benignity of temper which is the basis of every solid power of pleasing is not to be found in his breast. As a child he must have been passionate, petulant, & peevish, as a Man he is proud, unforgiving, & violent. his commands are given with haughtiness, delays in obeying are chid with passion, & resistance is punished with unrelenting persecution. he is tyrannical to his inferiors, cold to his equals, unless caprice makes him favour them with a sort of confidence, and as for superiors he cannot imagine he has any. Sensible that he must not be openly rude he vents his anger against any one who has displeas'd him, by interlarding his conversation with those secret strokes of satire & pointed allusions, which while they cannot be noticed, are sensibly felt.
