to matter -- and we might as reasonably expect the system of matter to continue during the suspension of gravitation as that human nature should preserve its being & accomplish its ends upon the annihilation of Self Love. --- All objections stated against it as an ignoble, & unworthy principle meet their answer in the reflexion of how great & ample advantages it produces in the World, of the purposes it serves, & the harmony it generates in the several orders of Society. The generality of objections however rather apply to a distorted shade of it, which tho' a branch of the same stock, yet is so contaminate, & degenerate as to have changed its nature -- viz Selfishness -- this has recourse to by methods, & sinister arts in order to accomplish the purposes of gratification, it pays no regard to the good of the whole it takes no instructions from reason
