This is obvious from the symptoms discoverable in the human race from earliest infancy; a desire to compass their own gratification being the predominant feature in their character. Considering the principle therefore, in its original state, & in the commencement of its operations it possesses neither the nature of virtue or of vice. -- That it cannot be virtue needs no proof, that it has no vice is clear from it being an original impulse of nature & being calculated to answer the most salutary ends of personal preservation. -- From
