it is in effect to enquire what is the will of God upon each seperate action that becomes the business of morality. we know his will either by the scripture or by the light of Nature, which is what we discover of his designs & dispositions, from his works. -- it is therefore foolish to seperate natural from revealed Religion, for the object of both is the same, namely to discover the will of the Author of the Universe, & provided we do discover it, it signifies little by what means. -- The method of coming at the will of the Almighty concerning any action, by the light of Nature is to enquire [[underline]] into the tendency of the action to promote or diminish the general good, or Happiness of ourselves & others. [[/underline]] this rule proceeds upon the presumption that the great disposer of all things wills, wishes, & desires the felicity of all his Creatures, & consequently that the actions that promote that end must be agreable to him, the others he must be averse to. --
