our motive, & the will of God our rule. from this it appears that moral obligation like all other obligations, is nothing more than an [[underline]] inducement [[/underline]] of sufficient strength; & resulting in some way from the command of a superior therefore those who would establish a system of morality independent of a future state must look out for some different Idea of moral obligation, unless they can prove that virtue conducts the possessor to certain Happiness in this life, or to a much greater share of it than he could attain by a contrary behaviour. -- To us there are [[underline]] 2 [[/underline]] questions, 1st. will there be future rewards & punishments; 2ly. if there be what will be rewarded or what punished? -- The 1st question comprises the [[deletion]] veracity [[/deletion]] [[addition]] credibility [[/addition]] of the christian religion aided by the presumptive proofs of a future retribution from the light of Nature; the 2d. composes the province of morality, so that we will turn our attention for tho' the 1st ^[[addition]] be [[/addition]] the foundation on which the fabric rests it requires no elucidation as all Men believe in it. - -- As the will of God is our rule to enquire what is our duty or what we are obliged to do in any instance
