ever that rule may be. some may say, why am I obliged to consult these rules, why must I do what is right, why attend to the fitness of things, to Nature, Reason, truth, &c. The proper method of conducting the enquiry is 1st. to examine what we mean when we say [[underline]] a Man is obliged to do a thing, [[/underline]] & then to shew why he is obliged to do it. Why is any Man obliged to do any thing he does not like to do? A Man is said [[underline]] to be obliged [[/underline]] when he is urged by a violent motive resulting from the command of another. 1st. the motive must be violent or strong, that is either necessity, obligation or interest oblige me to acquiesce. 2ly. it must result from the command of another, that is, a Man's immediate superior, or magistrate desires a thing of him, he considers himself as bound to comply, for let another Man ask that same thing of him he may refuse it, therefore a Man is said to be obliged to do a thing when he is urged by a strong motive resulting from the command of another; I mean to say that wherever the
