Why am I obliged to do what is right? why am I obliged to keep my word, to attend to the fitness of things, to act in conformity to reason, nature, truth, &c, to promote the public good, or even to obey the commands of scripture? let it be observed [[addition]] that all questions put by Men & answered [[/addition]] 1st that all these reasons ^ [[addition]] given by moralist for acting right [[/addition]] ultimately coincide, for [[underline]] the fitness of things [[/underline]] means their fitness to produce Happiness, [[underline]] their nature [[/underline]] means that actual constitution of the World by which such or such actions produce either the misery or Happiness of ourselves or others, [[underline]] reason [[/underline]] is the principle by which we discover or judge this constitution, [[underline]] truth [[/underline]] is this judgement expressed, or drawn out into propositions. So that it comes to pass that what promotes Happiness upon the whole is agreable to the [[underline]] fitness of things, to nature to reason, & to truth [[/underline]] & such is the nature of the divine character that what promotes the general Happiness is ^[[addition]] required by [[/addition]] the will of God; & what has all these properties must needs be [[underline]] right [[/underline]] for right means no more than conformity to the rule we go by what
