I do not mean with respect to the mere frauds he may practise on individuals, but from the faculty of preserving himself in reputation & Society with so many imputations annexed to his character by the art of laughing at his vices, & making them the subject of irresistible jocularity; for the Man who is able by his wit, & cunning to make a notorious act of dishonesty appear a good joke is more #
