Myself, presuming wretch, once thought Her kindness might by love be won, I lov'd & even strove to prove My ardor was surpast by none. Unskill'd alas in artful fraud My passion warm, my Soul sincere Nought did I wish from her to hide From whom, I seem'd t'have nought to fear. Too soon I told her that I lov'd, Too soon convinc'd her that 'twas true, A conquest sure, she always left, Ever in search of something new. To please her tho' Mankind should think Of different means whole years away, Quicker than thought her whims do change She would exhaust them in a day. The lovely Girl too, all agree, Has virtue, constant & sincere: And yet we all wonder, why She never suffers it t'appear.
