Ev'n Innocence itself weeps o'er the scene And her lov'd children supplicate in vain. Ah sweetest Orphans, where's th'indulgent breast That gently sooth'd your little Souls to rest? Where now the Mother who with tender care Kisd from your infant Eyes the starting tear Who hung delighted o'er your growing charms And clasped you smiling in her folded arms Saw in your looks the forming wish begin And hush'd to peace each little fear within? Ah now no more. She joins th'immortal throng And rapt in vision, aids their heav'nly song. Ev'n now while we th'untimely stroke bemoan She bends adoring at th'eternal throne. How bright a pattern for the dying hour When prest beneath afflictions ling'ring pow'r Resign'd she meekly bore the gracious rod And blest the kindness of Sov'reign God. For all obedient to the high command Long at her cruel death took his patient stand. To lead her hence, tho' soon, by steps so slow He menac'd oft, & oft withheld the blow While love & freindship join'd to tempt her stay And fondly make her wish a longer day;
