On hearing the Screech Owl at night. --- 1 Hark to that plaintive voice which thrills my ears And wakes my tim'rous soul to midnight fears, That vents its wailing thro' the slumb'ring air In sounds of lower and acute despair. 2 'Tis the lone sweet owl's call which I obey For I like him, make gloomy night the day, Condemned, like him, by Cynthia's dawn to rove Thro' the wild mazes of intricate love 3 You mournful bird to thee I fly To woo sweet melancholy to my breast For in thy sorrow sounding note I find A precious balm that soothes my frantic mind. 4 With thee I scale the antique ruin'd tower Or haunt the love retreats of cupid's bower. And as you vent aloud repeated woes In untold greif the silent tear-drop flows. 5 When morning's tints the pale face'd night dispel, You seek the hermit's roof, & I his cell; Till Luna reigns again - Thy call I tend And hail thee as my guest, & only freind.
