1 Beneath a poplar's spreading shade All nodding to the breeze A youth reclin'd in pensive mood And sad, & thoughtful ease 2 Beneath his feet a limpid stream In gurgling murmurs roll'd. A distant solemn, deep ton'd Bell Each mournful minute toll'd. 3 The late robb'd heifer, low'd her moan Wild wand'ring thro' the groves; While widow'd birds in plaintive strains Bewail'd their absent loves. 4 The Youth entranc'd in serious thought Each gloomy fate conceiv'd And what his active fancy form'd His mournful heart beleiv'd. 5 Perhaps that doleful knell Whose sound I faintly hear Proclaims my lov'd Amanda dead. Amanda ever dear! ---
