D'Alembert is talking of Women says. "without them the beginning of a Man's life must be helpless, the middle without Pleasure, & the end without comfort. Much affection & prudence are required to support well the character of a Wife. in other connections, it is sufficient perhaps, only to enter into the feelings of others so as to share their joys & woes; but every sentiment ought in this case to become reciprocal. A Woman should catch the prevailing tone of his mind, meet him ever with complacency, & even check an officious zeal to please when silence seems more conformable to his humour; Love ought then to wear the calmer, quieter semblance of freindship.
