The Cause of the [[underline]] Tides [[/underline]] or Ebbing, & flowing, of the Sea is accounted for by Sir Isaac Newton in the following manner. -- 1st -- to whatever part of the Earth's Globe, the Moon is vertical the waters near that part rise considerably upward by their gravitation towards the Moon which the lands would also do, were they not firmly held by the force of cohesion; 2dly the gravitation of the Earth towards the Moon is as the gravitation of a mass of matter,
