Sublime objects claim intenser care Too seldom lodg'd in hearts of young or fair. If hours of shadowy joy demand a thought, How ardent must eternal bliss be sought? If Earthly titles stamps their owners great How far superior ranks a heavenly seat? If transient stations yield such high renown How princely shines a never fading crown? Or fondly names are deem'd such valued things How great's the bride of heaven's king of kings? Dread not such objects, (dear celestial braid!) Thy face can tarnish, or they form degrade; Wisdom adds luster to the brightest Eyes The best Cosmetics, innocence supplies; But, vicious passions spoil the fairest fare And vice and folly loveliest forms disgrace. Did Reynolds paint a cherub, he would chase Th'angelic subject of my rustic muse: When her exalted eyes in meakness swam Before the Alter of the bleeding Lamb.
