Windsor Augt. 1st. 1783. My Dear William by the Account from Sheerness You have not advanced very rapidly but I trust You landed about yesterday. I shall not be long on this occasion; you must remember you have had many advantages over persons of Your rank, You have been early sent to Sea by which the common Service of a Mariner is now known to You; I have taken the first Opportunity on the Peace to send You to Germany that You may get quit of the Manners of a Sailor, acquire those of a Prince and a Gentleman, and acquire that knowledge as well as behaviour that may fit You for an Officer and for any other situation that time may require; above all things consider that unless You are a good man you cannot be of utility to your Country nor of credit to Your family this may seem an old fashioned language but experience will shew You it is most true, that You may become every thing that is estimable is My sincere wish who shall ever remain My Dear William Your most Affectionate Father George R.
