George R. George the Second, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain France and Ireland Defender of the Faith & c. a To Our most Dearly Beloved Son William Duke of Cumberland greeting. We reposing especial Trust and Confidence in your Loyalty Courage and Experience in military Affairs do by these Presents constitute and appoint you the said William Duke of Cumberland to be Major General of all and singular Our Forces as well Horse as Foot employed or to be employed in Our Services; you are therefore carefully to discharge the said Trust of major general by doing all Things thereunto belonging And We do hereby command all Our Officers and Soldiers that are or shall be employed in Our Service to obey you as their Major General; and you are to observe and follow such Orders and Directions from time to time as you shall receive from us or any your Superior Officer, according to the Rules & Discipline of War in pursuance of the Trust. We hereby repose in you. Given at Our Court at St. James's the Thirty-First Day of December 1742, in the Sixteenth year of Our Reign.
