St. James's May the 5th,1757. Dear William. Knowing your affection for my, I never shall impute to you, the negligence of those old fools, by whose stupidity you find your self distressed. however I depend upon your capacity, and application that you will forward things as much as possible and that you will still take the post at Lipstadt, by which you will keep the french at a distance. By all my accounts they have a very great desertion, and their battalions consist of about two thirds of their complement. Get all the provisions and forrage out of the Bisshopricks you can, and I flatter my self
