Letter [in French] from Queen Caroline to Mrs. Clayton [GEO/ADD/28/121], reporting that the King had ordered her to ask Mr Clayton what was the correct procedure for when money was paid to the Great Wardrobe, asking her for this information immediately but commenting that if the Queen was to see either Mrs or Mr Clayton, that would cause suspicion; with transcription in French and English translation [GEO/ADD/28/066].

X the queen means Sr. Robert Walpole. Novr. 14 1729 The King has ordered me, my dear friend to ask Mr. Clayton if it be the custom when money is paid to the great Wardrobe that there must be a warant from the Secretary instead of an acquittance from the Treasury. I desire you will let me know immediately. I fear if I should see you or Mr Clayton that would give suspicion, I hope you are in good health & wish it with all my heart. NB. The King had been told the right method but would not give entire credit to it till He was informed it was soe, by Mr. Clayton.
