1197. On the death of Henry 6th/ his brother Philip was appointed regent, during the minority, of his Son Frederick already Elected King of the Romans, but being obnoxious to the Popes for having withstood their encroachments, Innocent 3d who then filled the Papal Chair, caused first Berthold Duke of Zeringen, & afterwards Otho Duke of Brunswick (youngest son of Henry the Lion) to be chosen Emperor: the greatest Number of the German Princes, however asserted, their rights, & placed Philip on the Throne. A War ensued in which Philip was successful. He was assassinated by the Count Palatine of the Rhine, in consequence of a private quarrel in 1208.
