882. The Emperor Charles the Fat was declared King of France, Charles the Simple being too young to govern. His Dominions were now as extensive as those of Charlemagne, but his wanted Talents to govern them. He concluded an ignominious treaty with the Normans, & his conduct producing general contempt, he was deposed, & reduced to so much poverty as to subsist by the liberality of the Archbishop of Mentz. He died in the Abbey of Birchenau, to which he had retired, in 888
