In the earlier part of his reign he had divided his dominions with his three Sons; but in 829 having given a share of them to his 4th son Charles the bald, the others revolted, & the remainder of his life was spent in warfare with them, in which he was twice deposed, but again restored to the supreme authority. He died near Mentz, as he was marching with an Army to oppose his Son Lewis the German. 840.
