Charles more known by the name of Charlemagne, soon became sole possessor of the Crown by the death of his brother Carloman. --He subdued the Saxons, now the Principal inhabitants of Germany, after a thirty years war, & converted them to Christianity, he also conquered the Lombard's, & extended his Dominions over the greatest part of Europe. In 800. he was proclaimed Emperor of the Romans, by the Popes & the Roman People; thus reviving in his Person the dignity of Emperor of the Western Empire. Learning flourished under his Patronage. He died after a glorious reign of 46. years, & he was succeeded by his Son Lewis le Debonnaire. 814.
