(Copy) Answers [[note]] 10th. [[/note]] Captain Henderson of the 13th Regt informed me that soon after the Surrender, he waited upon Col. Cockbuine, and asked “What was all this about” (or some Question to the same purpose) Col. Cockbuine made him a reply [[addition]] ^ that [[/addition]] “if Soldiers would not do their duty, it was not his fault [[note]] 11th. [[/note]] The Enemy the Day following the Surrender of the Garrison, Disposed off, by Publick Vendue all the Vessels taken in the Bay, & the succeeding Day they divided the produce, along with the Money’s found in the King’s Chest. [[note]] 12th. [[/note]] The Money’s by the Information of a French Officer reported by Lieut Col. Cockburne to be in the Chest was about 60 Thousand Pounds he further added to their great surprise that it exceeded that Sum double — There were a Number of Private Purses &ca found in Col Cockbuine’s possession, which the Marquis De Bouille being made acquainted with, [[addition]] ^ ordered a Proclamation to be made [[/addition]] that all Inhabitants who had formerly given in their Private Monies to appear at Head Quarters, when they wou’d have them returned, consequently their Purses were returned. [[note]] 13th. [[/note]] I was not present at the opening of the Chest, or did I ever hear of any of the Officers in the Garrison, excepting Col. Cockburne was.
