(Copy) Answers [[note]] 6th [[/note]] Lieut Coll Cockbuine was not to my Knowledge informed of the landing of the Enemy, untill he was taken Prisoner. A Report Universally prevailed that an Orderly Serjeant of the 15th Regt acquainted him (by the Information of a Negro) at 11 OClock the preceeding Evening that the French —were then landing. He took little Notice of this Report & dismissed directly—Colonel Cockbuine took no steps whatever to prevent the Enemy’s taking possession of the Garrison, he being taken Prisoner on Horseback upon his return from Bathing. [[note]] 7th. [[/note]] Coll. Cockbuine was constructing an additional Battery on the Island when it was taken, which was not finished—I know of no other. [[note]] 8th. [[/note]] The Commandant the day after the Enternent of Brigadier General Ogilvie took a subalterns Guard from Tumble-down-Dick & replaced it by a Corporals & three Men which continued — In respect to the taking off or adding to the Guards or Sentries — beg leave to consider [[note]] 9th. [[/note]] Lieut. Lewis of the Artillery informed me that Lieut Col Cockbuine had some time before sent Captain Garstin to see if it was practicable for an Enemy to Land on that part of the Island. Captain Garstin reported in consequence that the Enemy could effect a landing at Jenkinn’s Bay—No steps to my knowledge were taken to prevent them.
