Early next morning, I went to pay my Compliments in person on board the Formidable; and if possible to remedy the mistake that had been made; and prevailed so far, with Sir George; as to leave as many of his own ships, as were most disabled, to take care of our prizes, & carry them to Jamaica, and to push on with the rest of his Fleet, in search of the Enemy; first by looking into Basseterre road St. Christophers & St. Eustatius; and not seeing anything of them at either of those places, to hasten off St Domingo Had I my dear General have had the honor of commanding His Majestys noble fleet yesterday; I may without the imputation of vanity say, the Flag of Island, would at this hour have graced the sterns of twenty sail at least of the Enemy’s ships of the Line I express to you my dear General my in most thoughts, trusting I do so, to a confidential friend; and to prove how strictly I have observed your very salutary & wholesome advice, I trouble you with a few letters between Sir George & me; and had he been my Father, Brother, or the dearest & best friend I had in the world, I could not have been more open, candid & sincere, in what I have suggested, as from my Zeal for our Royal & most gracious master’s Service, and my extreme veneration & Love for His Sacred person, no consideration in this can ever stand in competion with it—ever my dear General and most affectionately yours Saml Hood turn to the cover
