My Lord I have the Kings instructions to put His Royal Highness Prince William under your Lordships care & direction, during the next Campaign, and to send with him a Lieutenant, as Mr. Majendie will not be able to accompany His Royal Highness Also to inform you of the plan His Majesty first laid down which was that His Son should be educated in his profession as much like the Sons of Gentlemen as his instruction would allow, without court, and without any Parade, on the usual attendance upon Princes--This has been constantly attended to though in some instances broke thro' since I have been in this country. In the beginning I found it necessary to fix some Rules from which I determined not to depart, and the most of which I should recommend strongly to your Lordship to adhere to; I made it my Rule, never to dine or lay out of the Ship, without His Royal Highness, and it was a rule that His Royal Highness should not go out of the Ship without me--that He should receive no visits and never be sent for, but to the Commander in Chief, nor dine abroad but with the Flag officers of the Fleet, or the commanding officer on shore--When any officer His Royal Highness had not seen was in the fleet, I always invited him to dinner and introduced him before we satt down. It was a rule He should employ his mornings in Studying mathematics &c, till noon, when His Royal Highness with all the young people in the Ship went thro their exercise--That He should every day keep up his Log book--That he should wear the same dress as the midshipmen, and that he should not on any account go off the deck in his watch, and that he should not [[unclear]] the wardroom--these were the [[catchword]] chief [[/catchword]] Right Honble.
