Lord Hood to General Jacob de Budé noting letters received for himself and Prince William and reporting that he has just written to the King about the Prince, expressing his pleasure with Prince William's progress and commenting on the Prince's character, and remarking that he is expecting orders directing him to England.

Barfleur Port Royal Jamaica April 16th 1783 My dear General As I had the pleasure of writing you so lately as the 9th instant, I have but little to say now, but to tell you that on the 14th two days after my arrival here, I received your very obliging letters of the 2d & 24th. of Jany. and 6th. of Feby. at the same time I had the distinguished honor of a very kind letter from the King dated the 2d of Jany. with several under your envelope for Prince William I did not write to the King on the 9th. but have done it now, and flatter myself the just account I have given to His Majesty of His Royal Highness, will not only be acceptable but very pleasing both to the King & Queen Indeed & in truth my dear General, I am delighted with Prince William, and observe his mind to open daily, with every desire to do what is right, and has the goodness to give me his confidence without reserve His Royal Highness is rather of a volatile turn of mind, and His great flow of spirits are at times apt to run away with him, but he is easily restrained, and [[catchword]] takes [[/catchword]]
