Communicating that he will not be back to town till before going to Portsmouth: among the many reasons adduced is that Miss Long might consider his remaining there as a proof of his 'being most serious' [Catherine Long; when she inherited the family estate she became the richest commoner in Britain; William proposed to her but she refused]. He tells of the great affection with which he had been received by Lady Sarah [Sarah Champion de Crespigny (Windsor), Catherine's aunt]. He is quite shocked to have been refused and he tells about his love for Miss Long; he believes that, if Miss Long was Lady Sarah's daughter, she would have accepted William's proposal.
n a post scriptum note he says, again, that he loves Miss Long, but also that he treasures his female friend, Lady Mayo.
