Title
Letter from William Dalrymple to Prince William, written in London
Date Created
17 December 1784
Creator
Dalrymple, William
Description
Dalrymple is pleased to see that William is very close to the Duke of York [Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany]; he praises simple pleasures in life and the ability to be contented with less. In support of his views he quotes the beginning of a composition by [Alexander] Pope [An Essay on Man; or The First Book of Ethic Epistles to H. St. John L. Bolingbroke].
He talks about the latest development in foreign politics and, in particular, of foreign alliances. After having presented a detailed picture of the current situation of continental politics, Dalrymple agrees with William that this is all in a 'fluctuating state'. He briefly updates him on home politics as well.
The Prince of Wales caught a severe cold after falling asleep in his wet clothes - he as back from hunting.
