Sir Samuel Hood to General Jacob de Budé, remarking on the character of Sir George Rodney and his willingness to serve under him, reporting on his journey to join Rodney and the British fleet at Barbados, and on his fears if the French fleet should move from Martinique before the British ships are properly watered, commenting on the accusations that have been levelled at him and reported in English newspapers, regarding events on 5 September, and reporting on the location of the French fleet.

March 2nd St. Lucia After receiving a letter in the morning [[addition]] ^ yesterday [[/addition]] from Sir George to say he could not think of going into Port, and was determined to seek; and give battle to the enemy, he all of a sudden in the afternoon, bore up for this Island We are now busily employed in watering, Sir George’s Division is at Gros Islet, Admiral Drakes, in Cheoque Bay and mine came to the Cue de Sac this morning. Sir George wrote me just now, that the French fleet is between Guadaloup & Dominique—which cannot be, and if it is not at Fort Royal, it must be gone to Leeward — but I have not a doubt in my own mind, of their being at Fort Royal. The Frigates I sent to watch de Grasse’s motions, have both been off Pidjeon Island and are gone to Barbadoes agreeable to their [[catchword]] orders [[/catchword]]
